I was wondering if anyone has a "favorite" virtual classroom that they use for online lessons.
I have been exploring different options such as WIZiQ and LearnCentral, and I am even beta-testing the new Google Wave, but I wanted to see what other products teachers may be using. Any and all feedback is welcome.
Thanks. David in St. John, Indiana

Patricia, I found Moodle to be a bit overwhelming as well, although I know there are lots of people who love it. I think I am just too lazy to configure it Here is a link to a site with Moodle tutorials: www.indichosts.net/tutorials/moodle/Abracos, David C.

The big plus to moodle is that it is free and open source. I'm lucky that my university adopted it as the LMS and we have techies to configure it; I just have to use it. However, as I become accustomed to using it, I am finding it quite intuitive and easy to use. The difficulty is that it is big and complex, and it can be overwhelming to start with.

Hi, I'm using Ning with my class and I absolutely love it. It's really easy to use and it's safe, as you can make it either public or private. It's great for collaboration between classes. Here's mine: classiiia.ning.com/arjana

However, Moodle is a Learning Managemente System for asynchronous communication, and I think you are referring to virtual classrooms for live/synchronous sessions since you mentioned WiZiQ. I use Alado and also Elluminate. During the session, from week 3 on, we will be using these v-rooms for our live sessions. There are some others which are free which we will be also mentioning, like Dim Dim. I have my own Moodle which I use for my academic courses, but I combine it with wikis, blogs, podcasts and other Web 2.0 tools. Best, Daf

Thanks, Daf. Yes, I understand the distinction and that is very helpful. I will look forward to the demos in week 3. I will also check out the vc's you mentioned.

I'd like to know if anyone here uses DimDim. It's similar Wiziq, but I prfer it for two reasons: a. People attending live sessions don't need to have an account. b. You can download a recording of the class even with the free account.
Any comments? I've never used Elluminate as a teacher, because it's not free...how does it compare?

Unfortunately, I cannot use DimDim. I have had login problems since it was created and have not been able to solve them. Elluminate is one of the best v-rooms, and you will be able to see by yourself in the different sessions we will be delivering in BaW. You can have a free Elluminate but only for 3 people :-( Webheads have a free Elluminate room provided by Learning Times that any webhead can use. Cheers, Daf

Hi,
All the tools you mentioned are great, but there is one that I knew recently and I have become a fan of it. It is called vyew, it is simmilar to wiziq but the only disadvantage it has is that it does not record the conferences. It has a whiteboard and students can get into it as guests, so they do not need to have an account. You can make groups and open books (that's like a classroom) for each one. I invite you to try it too.

Hi , For virtual classrooms , I generally use wiziq but occasionally illuminate . I tried vyew , it is free with the limit of 20 students . It has all the necessary features such as voice , video , doc uploading . Webhuddle is an open source solution you may like to try . The demo sounds Ok with recording feature and playback www.webhuddle.com/Mbarek-Morocco
